Mentor, OH – David French’s vision for Holmbury Limited was to create a company destined to become a worldwide leader in the production of hydraulic quick disconnect couplings and hydraulic components. French founded Holmbury in 1983 after beginning his career in England as an apprentice in electromechanical engineering. He worked as a salesman for several tooling and hydraulic companies before fate intervened – and Holmbury was born. “At a trade show I was given a flat faced coupling with serious defects. I redesigned it, and in the process founded Holmbury.”

With the help of a subcontractor, and a few further modifications the design worked so well that it caught the eye of companies such as JCB, Caterpillar, and other heavy equipment manufacturers. They encouraged David to further develop the coupling for mounted hammer systems. When the International Standards Organization convened to set the standards for flat face couplings the Holmbury design was adopted for ISO 16028.

“Holmbury continued to advance hydraulic coupling technology and in the process earned four silver medals at the SED Exhibition,” French said. “This marked the first time that any company had won four silver medals at SED.” The silver medal is the highest award at the  component level.

David also had the foresight to recognize the importance of doing business in the United States. To accommodate this expanding market and to capitalize on its huge potential, French entered the North American market in 1987 through a distributor, Integrated Technologies. The business grew to such a point that Holmbury, Inc. was established in 2002.
